Design Story
Freedom Lab is built on Niels Diffrient’s philosophy that great design should work with the body, not against it. Known for pioneering ergonomic innovations like weight-activated recline and pneumatic seat-height adjustment, Diffrient designed Freedom to remove the need for complicated controls and constant tweaking. His work has been widely recognized, including the Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Award.
The stool version extends this design to elevated work environments. With its increased seat height and supportive footring, Freedom Lab Stool delivers the same intuitive comfort while supporting the demands of lab benches, counters, and standing-height workstations.

Lotus Coated Performance Textile
Routine cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth using a mild soap and water solution. Allow to air dry.
Disinfection: Compatible with a 10% bleach/water solution and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Apply with a clean, damp cloth. Do not saturate. Rinse with clean water and allow to air dry. Always follow your facility's approved cleaning and disinfection protocols.
Multi-Layer Duron Arm Pads
Antimicrobial surface. Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap solution. Compatible with standard hospital-grade disinfectants. Rinse with clean water after disinfectant use.
Frame and base can be wiped down with the same damp cloth and mild soap solution. Standard lab and healthcare cleaning agents are safe to use on all hard surfaces.

Design By Niels Diffrient (1928–2013)
Niels Diffrient was a pioneering industrial designer known for his human-centered approach and belief that design should be intuitive and effortless. Often called “the last of the mid-century modernists,” he focused on simplicity, allowing form to follow function in its purest sense.
A Cranbrook Academy graduate alongside Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, Diffrient went on to shape some of the most iconic products of the 20th century. His work at Henry Dreyfuss Associates helped define modern industrial design, while his research into human factors redefined how products support the body.
His partnership with Humanscale introduced a new standard in seating, creating designs that automatically adapt to the user. Diffrient’s legacy lives on in products that are simple, timeless, and designed to improve the human experience.
